Our communities are a paddler’s paradise. Bordered by the Pitt and Fraser Rivers, our communities also boast Pitt Lake, the largest freshwater tidal lake in North America, Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park, and in east Maple Ridge discover Whonnock Lake and Rolley Lake.
Wherever you choose to paddle, binoculars and a camera are a must. The abundance of wildlife that you will encounter along the shores of our rivers and lakes are guaranteed to make your visit a memorable one.
Life jackets are mandatory in BC.
Destinations
Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park
As one of the largest parks in BC, Golden Ears Provincial Park is valued for its recreational opportunities. Canoeing and kayaking are very popular on Alouette Lake, as well as other water activities such as swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, boating and fishing. Canoe/kayak rentals are available in the Alouette day-use area from June through September.
The warm waters of Rolley Lake are an ideal place canoeing, fishing and swimming. The sandy beach is a good spot for a picnic or just relaxing and soaking up the tranquil park atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy several kilometres of easy walking trails leading around the lake and to Rolley Falls.
Rolley Lake Provincial Park is 23 km (13.8 miles) northwest of Mission, BC. Take Highway 7 to Maple Ridge and turn north at 287th Street. Turn right onto Dewdney Trunk Road and then turn left onto Bell Road and drive north to the park.
Pitt Lake/Pitt River/Widgeon Creek/Widgeon Falls via Pitt Addington Wildlife Management Area (Formerly known as Grant Narrows Regional Park)
Paddle the waters of North America’s largest tidal freshwater lake. Enjoy the meander tranquility of Widgeon Creek or head into Pitt Lake where you can check out the First Nation pictographs that adorn the rock face at the southwest side of the lake, a vivid embodiment of the ancient Katzie culture.
If you’re planning a longer trip, you can paddle your way to the north end of Pitt Lake and then embark on a lengthy hike leading through the uninhabited, historic town of Alvin then to the natural Pitt River Hot Springs.

The home of Ridge Canoe & Kayak Club and the largest tadpoles you’ll probably ever see! Whonnock Lake, a popular year-round lake, is a bog lake home to a variety of native plans and colonies of beavers and muskrats, as well as to loons, mallard ducks and small birds. The lake is stocked annually with rainbow trout, and supports a substantial recreational fishery. Park facilities include a barbecue pit, beach volleyball court, concession stand, picnic tables, a playground, washrooms, canoe rentals, drinking water and a sandy beach.
